A good day for GLRR in Lawrence tackling that brutal hill.  Kara, rocking the GLRR singlet, won the women's race in 24:26.  Festus was second in the male 30s in 25:15, and Cindy Meklenberg was second in the female 50s in 33:41.  This was the unofficial first leg of the Wild Rover series, with the official first leg moving to April due to the Fizzard of '13.  A fizzard is a blizzard that fizzles.

Lowell, MA – This year’s Hynes’ Road Race was a bit greener due to the dual victories of two Greater Lowell Road Runners. Leading the way in the men’s division was Steve Gendron of Lowell who posted a 26:23 to win his third consecutive Hynes’ Road Race. Kara Haas of Chelmsford won her second consecutive Wild Rover race and second consecutive Hynes’ Race with a 30:09. This was Kara’s sixth overall victory at the event. She goes for the Wild Rover Triple Crown on April 14 at the rescheduled Frozen Shamrock in Haverhill. This year’s Hynes’ Race drew over 1000 entrants with 954 finishing the traditional five mile course.

Patrick Frye Memorial 5K

Lowell, MA -- The venue may have changed but the outcome was the same as Lowell’s Steve Gendron (16:14) and Chelmsford’s Kara Haas (18:01) finished first in the 2nd Annual Patrick Frye Memorial 5K in Lowell. Both runners finished first in last Sunday’s Hynes Road Race. Steve outpaced fellow Lowellian’s Tim Patterson and Jonathan Sheehan who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively. Kara who finished fourth overall was followed by Ciara Camire of Somersworth, NH and Julie Dragon of Marlboro, MA.

Today’s race was in honor of Patrick A. Frye, nicknamed ‘P Fritty’ lived just 20 years, 4 months and 7 days. He was born in Colombia, South America and raised in Lowell, Massachusetts. The race was held in his honor at the Mt. Peasant Country Club in the Highland section of Lowell.

IFAR was a Kenyan sweep on the men's side with locals Titus, Ben, and Festus.  On the women's side GLRR youth team standout Alisa Crueger-Cain broke through the 20 minute barrier for the win in 19:50.  Look out for her at Good Times this year!  Other GLRR running highlights were: Chuck Farrow’s daughters Jordan (14) and Davis (11) went first and third in the under 19 division. Laura Boerman – second in W45-49. Antonio Febo – first M50-54. Ken Skier and Bill Corbett went 2, 3 in M55-559. Barry Person took M65-69 and Johanna Riley took W65-69.

I’m really happy with my run at Stu’s, and the nominations I received for this week’s AOW (especially in light of the sources, I’m really humbled). But when it came down to the recipient for the week ending March 3rd, the committee cast a cold and calculating eye on the results and has chosen a most worthy recipient.

Some Chickens like to fly low under the radar, operating in stealth mode so as to avoid detection. That was the case for this Athlete of the Week until he unleashed a 3:24 PR at Stu’s 30k with a 2:26:35 finish. I asked him about his race, I really hope he doesn’t mind that I’m quoting his response (he does a better job of explaining it than I could hope to, I think we have another member of Glenn’s rapidly growing Greater Lowell Running Writers club).

“…it really wasn't about the time at all. I felt in control the entire race. I ran a negative split by over 2 minutes but most importantly I ran with a group of four other runners and absolutely loved every minute I was out there. To me, that is the essence of running. The time was just the icing on the cake…looking forward to another strong week of training.”

Week Ending March 10 - Kara Haas

If there's one thing we've all had enough of, it's ado. If there are two things we've all had enough of, it's ado and snow. Can't promise we won't have more snow, but without further ado I give you the Athlete of the Week for March 4-10.

To say the least, she's no stranger to winning races. One week after breaking the tape at the Claddagh Pub Four Miler in 24:25, she did it for the SIXTH time at the Hynes 5 Miler in 30:09. Good luck to anyone who wants to wrest that crown from her firm grip.

Please join me in congratulating Kara Molloy Haas on her selection as Athlete of the Week. I'm sure all of Angry Chicken Nation is pulling for a Wild Rover Series sweep, when the Frozen Shamrock 3 miler (delayed by that snow that we've all had enough of) runs on April 14th. 

If it snows on April 14th, look for emails from Glenn and Dave Camire looking for Angry Chicken volunteers to shovel the course. At least it's the three miler of the 3-4-5 series, the show (and the sweep!) must go on.

Week Ending March 17 - Nicholas Kanaracus

The team from the Mill City had a great day in the Whaling City, with so many remarkable performances and results that the AOW committee thought it would be nearly impossible to pick just one. But among those great performances in New Bedford by both chicks and chickens, one stood out from the rest. Only one Angry Chicken came home with first place in his or her age group.

If you've seen him working hard on the Rat Dome track, you know the result against the always strong USATFNE field was well earned and speaks for itself. Please join me in congratulating Nicholas Kanaracus on his selection as Athlete Of The Week for March 11-17.

Boston Marathon Bus and Training Runs

Training Runs

New Bedford Half Marathon

Fifty-two Angry Chickens made the annual trip down to New Bedford for the second stop in the New England Grand Prix circuit.  This race boasts a fairly fast course and is a favorite tune up for Boston.  A bulk of the club met up at the usual spot in Drum Hill at around 8am for the hour and a half drive south.  By the time most of us arrived at the YMCA Marli and John had our numbers all picked up and laid out for us.

Weather was in the mid 30s and windy from the NW.  That wind played a small factor in the first couple of miles then a huge factor in the last few.  It did give us a nice boost down the downhill back stretch of the course, but that's little solace when you're struggling up that mile 12 hill into the teeth of it.  It also made it a little hard to dress for.  Some were in shorts and singlets.  Others in long sleeves and long pants.  And some wore Irish flag bodysuits or dressed as Batman.  OK, maybe those weren't weather driven.  At the start runners were huddled into any bit of sun they could find.

At about 11am they took pity on us and let us get warm by running 13.1.  Crowd support was great, including the friendliest cops I've ever seen working a race.  The first Chicken across the line was James in an outstanding 1:13:42 -- trimming over 9 minutes off his time from last year.  The rest of the 11th place GLRR Male Open team was not far behind -- with all five scorers and one of the alternates clocking in under 1:20.

Layce was the first GLRR woman to cross the line, finishing in 1:24:20.  She led the Women's Open team to a 12th place finish against some stiff competition.

On the Masters side EJ scored down from the Seniors team to lead the guys to a strong 4th place finish.  In fact, EJ also scored down to the Open Team giving him the coveted hat trick.  The women were led by Trish to a 5th place finish.

The Seniors Men's team got us into the money, finishing in second place and ahead of the vaunted Unicorns. The scoring team of EJ, John Barbour, Matt Curran, Jim Garcia, and David Oliver all finished in less then 87 minutes.

The Senior's Women Team of Liane, Kathy, and Nancy took home a 4th place finish, while the the Veteran Men's team of Chip, Nick, and Tom got us into the money again with a 2nd.

On the individual side -- Denny took home 3rd 70-99.  Eleven GLRR finished in the top 10 in their USATF-NE five year age groups -- highlighted by Nick winning his, Liane and Denny second in theirs, and Trish third in hers.  The highest age grading belongs to John Barbour with a whopping 87.7%.  Many of the Green also notched PRs on the day.

Afterwards several of us headed down to our usual post-New Bedford pub for some re-hydration.  It's a good thing no one else had the idea of going to an Irish pub on St. Patty's Day.  Sláinte!

Great race by Steve Gendron – first GLRR runner over the line in 2nd place overall with a 15:49.

Our first chicklet was Trish in 19:46 (good for first Master). This was picked by Somerville as an SRR Grand Prix race – so we were over-run by Bumble Bees – still the chickens showed well overall. Top runners were:

Four Chickens made the trip out to the island for this one.  Jason Bui finished 17th overall with a 2:12.  Ally Maslowski finished with an impressive 2:30.  The “twins” Zona Sharfman and Susan Bourque finished in 2:37 and 2:40.

Fudgicle Wrap Up

The biggest news was the first ever (as far as we know) officially canceled Fudgcicle.  The Nemo blizzard scared the crap out of us and after a lot of bluster from us about never canceling – we (the loosely organized Fudge committee) had lots of emails and calls back and forth and we gave in to cancel – then a few hours later Gov Patrick issued the travel ban.  So this year the season was six races rather than the scheduled seven.

On the competitive side – the fastest man was Dave Corbett (hmm maybe we need to twist his arm into a chicken wing and get him in green).  Our fastest rooster was Liam Skinner at 18:12.  The fastest chicklet was Trish Bourne at 20:41, but she failed to show up Saturday and so Liane Pancoast walked away with the coveted Fudgcicle medal with a 22:38.

Most improved woman was a new runner brought by Andre Chandonnet – Marangely Pagan who improved by almost 33 minutes.

At the Fudgcicle you must to present to the win the coveted medals  - and so our most consistent runner medal winners were Andre and Marli Piccolo – who both averaged within 12 seconds of the overall average pace.

The Fudgcicle remains insanely popular – each week we had more new runners that we could imagine – even this past week…  all in all there were 228 runners that ran one or more Fudgcicles.   We averaged 92 finishers a week with a (we think) an all-time high of 109.  Field size at least at the beginning was a problem – but with some instruction to the runners – that seemed to abate – the runners were (mostly) great at following our race guidelines.  Still we are considering a couple of ideas for limiting size – perhaps a time change to 7:30 and/or a slight price increase with extra funds donated to local Tewksbury charities.

Last on the Fudgcicle – thanks to all the volunteers – Jessica, Mike Sheehan, John Morrison, Pat Sheridan, Nancy Stronach and the only volunteer to make it every single week – Scott Casper.

The groundhog's done his thing, which means we're emerging from the racing doldrums. This weekend saw a bunch of great efforts, like Mike Girouard at the Great Stew Chase 15k, and Steve Gendron and Kevin Carnabucci at the Super 5k. The AOW committee scans the interwebz from edge to edge, but as the mercury rises so too does the number of Angry Chickens pinning on bibs.

The Athlete of the week for January 28th - February 3rd didn't take long to make his presence as a member of Greater Lowell known.  Getting ready for his entry into the Masters category in March, Kevin Carnabucci dug deep at the Super 5k for his first sub 18:00 in...well...quite a while.  The green and gold apparently suits 'bucci well, as his finish in 17:46 was good for 15th overall and second Angry Chicken.

He's a very welcome addition to our Men's Masters team, and we're looking forward to more great races from him.  Please join me in congratulating Kevin on his selection as Athlete Of The week.

The AOW committee has some serious catching up to do, but the first rule of getting out of a hole is "stop digging". So we are going to award AOW for the week ending 2/24, and backfill our other recipients as soon as possible.

This was an awesome week to be an Angry Chicken, so many great performances and so much fun in Amherst. Way too much awesomeness to pick a single winner.
To quote Matt Story, "winning your age group in a Grand Prix is a big effing deal". Yes it is Matthew, yes it is. Liane Pancoast took on the best that New England has to offer, and came out on top of the 55-59 AG. That's how to celebrate your first day in a new age group, happy birthday Liane!

Our second winner continues to roll to new personal records on a regular basis, seeing the payoff for his commitment to high volume and high quality training. James "The Pocatello Kid" Sullivan made a "big effing deal" statement of his own, flattening out the hills of Amherst in 56:22 for 30th overall and 1st Angry Chicken. That's 5:39 per mile on a rollercoaster course, I can't wait to see what the Kid has up his sleeve for the rest of the series (especially the Hollis Fast 5k, get outta the way, ANGRY Chicken coming through!)

Not Your Average Jones

Since your truly couldn't be there this year, here is a write-up on The Jones Group 10 Miler from the Birthday Girl Liane Pancoast, who dominated her new 5 year age group by over 4 minutes!

The Jones 10 Miler race was held on Feb 24 in Amherst, MA.  This is the first race of the USATF-New England Grand Prix.  The big story leading up to the race was the snow storm that threatened to bring a foot of snow on Sunday. No problem for the 31 GLRR Angry Chickens who piled in to SUVs and carpooled out to Amherst for the Jones 10 miler. As Dave Penn said “Neither rain nor snow shall hold back the angry chickens!”.

Once we arrived in Amherst, we discovered that the weather there was better than in the Lowell area.  No snow until we lined up for the start, of course.  It continued to snow for about half of the race, but luckily it didn’t stick.  The footing was no problem on the course, except for the 1 ½ mile stretch of dirt roads which were really muddy and slushy.  The course is as hilly as we all remembered.  The early hills were tough, but the hills at the end of the race were torture!

Everyone had a great race!  James Sullivan was the first GLRR to cross the finish line coming in 30th overall in a blazing time of 56:22.  Ally Maslowski was the first female GLRR finisher.  Liane Pancoast came 1st in the 55-59 age group and Denny LeBlanc won the 70+ age group.

Our teams had a successful day with our Men’s Seniors team leading the group coming in 2nd out of 9th place.  EJ Hrynowski, Jim Garcia, David Penn, Ken Goodin, and Tom Peters all scored for that team.  The GLRR Men’s open team came in 8th place with James Sullivan, Cody Freihofer, Justin Patronick, Andrew Downey, and James Deluca all scoring for the team.  The Men’s masters team finished in 5th place with Mike Girouard, E J Hrynowski, Jim Garcia, Fil Faria, and David Penn helping out the team.  And our Men’s Veteran’s team came in 3rd with Tom Peters, Nick Kanaracus and Glenn Stewart scoring.

With only 5 GLRR women showing up at Jones, everyone was needed to help our women’s teams.  Our women’s open team came in 10th with Ally Maslowski, Liane Pancoast and Marli Piccolo scoring for that team.  We also managed a GLRR women’s masters team coming in a strong 5th place with Liane, Marli and Madeline Febo helping that team.  Unfortunately, we needed one more senior woman, so we didn’t have a women’s senior team for this race.

Congratulations to everyone who completed the Jones 10 miler.  On to New Bedford Half Marathon on St Patrick’s day for the 2nd race in the USATF-NE Grand Prix.

January Race Results

Ready Set 1st Run

In the 10K there was a great battle for the top spot between the Pocatello Kid and Mike Cooney.

The Kid (James Sullivan) would lead everything – 5K and 10K for the first couple of miles –
as James and Mike derided the 5K leaders for not making a push. The two of them led the turn
onto Old Ferry Rd – before the 5Kers finally kicked past to finish their race. Conditions were
very windy and a second lap for the 10K was clearly demoralizing – Mike as able to bear down
harder and the Kid settled for 2nd a minute back in 36:11 (sub 6s on a tough day).

Our first chicklet was Ally Maslowski in 43:30 (only a tick over 7s) – and she easily took the
F30 division. Other award winners were: Ann Marie Johnson (2nd F30), Liane Pancoast (1st F50)
and Jack Flynn (3rd M60).

On the 5K side – Andrew Pupa was first chicken (3rd M20), and Bethany Knoettner was first
chicklet (and won her F30 division). Other award winners Pamela Beckwith (3rd F40), Cindy
Meklenburg (2nd F50), Johanna Riley (2nd F60), Jonathan MacKenzie, Gorge Bisson (1st & 3rd
M70), George Leslie (1st M80).
